Severe hospital overcrowding continues today at many hospitals with a total of 767 admitted patients  waiting for beds this morning, according to today’s INMO Trolley Watch. Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel reports 11 patients on trolleys, Nenagh has 5 trolley patients –  University Hospital Limerick(UHL) remains the most overcrowded with 103 admitted patients on trolleys today.

HIQA is to submit it’s interim report on the provision of acute and emergency care in the Mid West Region by the end of this month – the report had initially been expected last month. The Government asked HIQA to review the findings of the Clarke Report in to the death of 16 year old Aoife Johnston at a time of severe overcrowding in UHL in December 2022 and also to examine if a second Emergency Department(ED) is required in the Mid West which has only one ED serving a population of 413,000 as per the 2022 census.

HIQA says its full report will be submitted to the Department of Health by Summer 2025 but could not give a specific target date in a response issued to Tipp Mid West Radio.
