The counting of votes in the Seanad elections has concluded. Outgoing Senator Garret Ahearn Fine Gael, based near Clonmel, has been re-elected via the Administrative Panel. Four Tipperary Councillors were unsuccessful in their bids for Seanad Seats – Cllrs Declan Burgess, Mairin McGrath, Imelda Goldsboro and Richie Molloy.
The Seanad total membership of 60 will be finalised when the Taoiseach Micheal Martin nominates the final 11 Senators – these will be split 6 for Fianna Fail and 5 for Fine Gael as per the Programme for Government. The elections over the two University Constituencies and the Five Panels results in Fianna Fail having 19 senators, Fine Gael 18, Sinn Fein 6, Labour 2, The Green Party, Social Democrats and Aontú one each and 12 Independent senators were elected.
