Motion Regarding St. Cormac’s Cemetery To Be Considered By Council Strategic Policy Committee

A motion from Cllr Liam Browne about the regulations governing the allocation of plots in St. Cormac’s Cemetery in Cashel was considered at yesterday’s Municipal District Meeting.  In a detailed response the Council Executive says bye laws for burial grounds adopted in 2022 govern decisions about graves in the county and that until the byelaws are reviewed at some future date no change can be made by way of motion.  However, the motion will now be considered by a Council Strategic Policy Committee.

Councillor Browne says given the Council has yet to find a new cemetery location and that plots can only be purchased at the time of burial some community members are concerned that they will not be buried close to loved ones. The motion submitted proposed adding a restriction on who could purchase a grave in St Cormac’s Cemetery.

The Council response also reveals that due to site and topographical conditions, it will not be possible to utilise the extension to St Cormacs that came into use in 2012, to the fullest possible extent. This means that the Council will have to identify suitable lands at an external location to provide a new graveyard to meet the needs of the community.  At present the Council is actively identifying a number of locations in the environs of the town for a new burial ground but this is not expected to be concluded in the short to medium term.
