Councillor Declan Burgess is welcoming news that Tipperary County Council has submitted an application for funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme to carry out improvements to the old town commissioner’s fountain at the ‘Back of the pipe’ in Cashel.
The Fountain, which was first installed in 1842 to provide a supply of clean water to the town, is now considered a key feature of Cashel town centre.
Councillor Burgess describes the current condition of the fountain as an eye sore in disrepair with repairs needed to the roof, stonework and plumbing.
Failte Ireland and Tipperary county Council are working on a major plan to make Cashel a new destination town for tourists and upgrades to the town centre public realm form part of the plan. Two new canopies are to be installed in the Plaza area in the next two weeks to complete a project that began before Christmas with a more extensive public realm project yet to commence.
