Research by the Irish Country Living magazine reveals that Hospitals in Ireland collected €15.7 million in car parking fees in 2023 – with patients and family attending TUH in Clonmel contributing €279,048.

Campaigners against the fees say they are still waiting for Simon Harris, outgoing Taoiseach and former Minister for Health to live up to his 2020 promise of capping the prices to €10 a day. A task force promised at the time has never met.

The data shows that people attending University Hospital Limerick contributed €1.3 million.  Cork University Hospital benefited from a total of €2.2 from parking fees in 2023, Waterford Hospital collected €1M while University Hospital Kerry in Tralee collected €497,397 in parking fees.

The HSE says the funds are used to fund hospital services – campaigners say parking fees at hospitals are an additional burden on patients and their families.
