GAA authorities in Croke Park have appointed Tipperary man Willie Maher as the GAA’s National Head of Hurling. Mr Maher will take on a full time role to protect and promote hurling across Ireland. The longer term objective is to have more counties competing for the Liam McCarthy Cup by 2034, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the GAA in Thurles.

From Ballingarry and an All-Ireland winning minor captain in 1996, Willie Maher, will formally commence work as the nation Head of Hurling in April of this year.  In 2012 he was the manager of the All Ireland winning Tipperary Minor Hurling team and has extensive coaching and team management experience.

The role will also involve some collaboration with the Camogie Association.
