Thurles Councillors Vote To Review Parking Bye Laws In Respect To All Day Parking Permits

162

Councillors in Thurles have voted to review the parking bye laws in the town particularly in respect of all day parking permits in the three central car parks on Slievenamon Road, Liberty Square at PTSB, and Parnell Street Car Parks.

The motion was put forward in the names of Cllrs Peggy Ryan Fine Gael and Cllr Micheal Lowry Independent. The councillors are asking the executive to review the town Parking Bye Laws. If the number of all-day permits at the 3 central car parks is reduced or eliminated the Councillors believe it will increase the available parking for visitors to the town for social or commercial reasons.

Council management will now begin a review of the bye lays and hope to have agreement on new arrangements before the end of March.  The change is likely to cause difficulty for those working in the town as it may eliminate or change their ability to park close to their work location.

Local Traders expressed concerns about the impact plans to further reduce parking spaces in Liberty Square and O’Donovan Rossa street will have on the level of footfall for town centre businesses during the recent consultation on the Phase 2 of the Liberty Square Public Realm Scheme.  Although the plan was approved it will not be implemented until 2028 allowing time for some additional car park capacity to be put in place.
