The Irish Blood Transfusion service is reporting a significant number of appointment cancellations this week as a result of the bad weather and is under increasing pressure to make up blood donations as demand from Irish Hospitals is increasing month on month. Demand for Blood in October 2024 was up 8% over the corresponding period last year meaning that 10,782 units of blood were required by Irish hospitals.
The service is appealing for donors to attend a clinic in Cappawhite Community Centre this evening. The clinic is appointment based so donors will not experience undue delays. Appointments can be made between 4.50pm and 8.10pm. Intending or new donors are asked to call 1800 222 111 for appointment. Details of upcoming clinics can be found on the giveblood.ie website at this link here.
At present the service has just two days stock of A negative on hand and three days of both B and O negative. Four days supply of A positive are on hand – the service likes to have 7 days stock on hand at all times.
