A campaign group is highlighting that there are 6,344 empty homes across Tipperary according to the 2022 Census data. Uplift, a people-powered campaign group, is urging all political candidates, if elected, to focus on bringing the tens of thousands of empty and derelict homes back into use.
The figure of 6,344 empty homes across Tipperary, does not include holiday homes that may also be sitting empty.
Nationally there were 163,433 vacant properties on Census night in 2022.
Research by GeoDirectory also in 2022 established a lower total than the Census respondents of 86,708 vacant dwellings. Nearly 30,000 of these had been empty since 2011.
Uplift wants Councils and the Government to do more to turn empty houses into homes by buying and leasing empty houses, making it easier for families to access unused grants, working with businesses to turn empty main streets into vibrant communities, and accurately counting the number of vacant and derelict buildings in the county.
Uplift is also running an online email campaign asking election candidates to sign up to a pledge that they will prioritise turning empty houses into homes if they get elected – the pledge is available at this link here.
