A new Apprenticeship programme is now taking applications to help increase the number of qualified social workers in Ireland.

At present there are five places available – one in Thurles, one in Cork city and 3 in Limerick City – other places may come on-stream before the programme commences in June 2025.

Social workers play a unique role in the health service, providing support, information and advice to people to cope with ongoing difficulties in their lives.

The HSE is supporting the 2-year ‘Apprentice in Social Work’ programme by providing employment while apprentices undertake a QQI Level 9 Masters or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work in UCC. Apprentices will have a 2-year full-time contract with a starting salary of €33,422.

Applications will close on December 16th at 5pm – interviews are planned for early February 2025.     UCC course fees are fully sponsored by the HSE for the Master of Social Work and the Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work Studies.

The ‘Apprentice in Social Work’ is a 24 month programme where the apprentice will spend 15 months working in an HSE Social Work team under the supervision and mentorship of a professionally qualified Social Worker, and 9 months with UCC undertaking modules in social work theory, skills, social policy and topics specific to social work settings such as child and family welfare and mental health.
