Drivers in Thurles are reminded that a new traffic layout and parking restrictions commenced at 8.30am this morning(Tuesday Nov. 26th) in the west end of Liberty Square.
The changes are to be in place until Friday evening as part of a four-day trail in advance of a council vote on December 4th to make the changes permanent as part of the Liberty Square Phase 2 project.
The roadway outside Hickey’s Chemist is being reduced to one lane and a total of 14 parking spaces are being blocked off in the trial.
The 14 parking spaces will be permanently removed if the councillors vote in favour of the current proposal next week.
AECOM, the Design Consultants for the Liberty Square upgrade project will be monitoring the temporary traffic layout and will issue an assessment and report based on the outcomes.
Traders in the town are opposed to the loss of town centre parking spaces – Transport Infrastructure Ireland is proposing the change to improve pedestrian safety by reducing the number of parking spaces in the parking island at the west end of Liberty Square.
In addition, four new pedestrian crossing will be installed in the area.
