Thurles Drivers Advised Of New Road Layout Trial Of The West End Of Liberty Square

Drivers in Thurles are advised that a new layout for the roadway and parking in the West End of Liberty Square will be trialed next week for four days.
It is proposed to commence traffic and parking restrictions on Liberty Square on Tuesday 26th November at 8.30am until close of business on Friday 29th November. Traffic will be reduced to one lane outside Supermacs, parking will be restricted outside Supermacs and vehicles will also be restricted from using the car park on the eastern side of the central traffic island. This does not affect the area near the Dr Croke monument.
The proposal is part of a wider plan included in a recent Part 8 planning consultation and is not supported by traders in the town centre. 14 parking spaces will be removed permanently from the area including 12 in the central island if the plan is ultimately approved. Thurles Councillors are to decide on the matter at a special meeting on December 4th.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland says removing the parking spaces in the central island and constructing two pedestrian crossings on the north and south of the island is essential to improve pedestrian safety.  Responses from Planning officials to the submissions on the Part 8 reveal that the change to a single lane outside Supermacs was trialed for a 28 hour period which is disputed by local traders who say it was only tested for one day.
