A new book detailing the Revolutionary Women of Tipperary in the period between 1914 and 1923 is to be launched in the Excel Centre on Saturday at 2pm. Jo O’Neill from Cahir Historical Society will be the event MC with Dr Martin Mansergh delivering the formal book launch address.
Renowned historian and author, Noreen Higgins McHugh, has compiled the stories of the women of Cumann na mBan in her latest release and shines a light on the contributions of these formidable women to Ireland’s revolutionary era.  The book examines Cumann na mBan’s structure, membership, and the courageous actions undertaken by these women in pursuit of Irish independence. Data from the Irish Military Archives’, the 1930 Nominal Rolls, 436 pension summaries, and 364 Service Medal applications provide the detailed information for the book which is inspired by the story of Maureen Power from Coolnagun, Tipperary town.
Ms Power(1896-1925) was a teacher in Dublin, joined in the fight for Irish Freedom and was imprisoned in Galway, later released she joined the Anti Truce side in the Civil War and was imprisoned in March 1923 but went on hunger strike seeking proper recognition for the Republican prisoners – after the hunger strike ended she made a daring escape and was never re-arrested.  As she was engaged at the time of her death she was buried in her wedding dress – her fiancé, Brendan Considine died in 1983.
Ms Higgins has previously published books on Tipperary’s Tithe Wars and A guide to Tracing Your Tipperary Ancestors. The book will be on sale at the launch event at a discounted price – cash sales only. A number of local outlets will stock the book in the coming weeks including Joe Whelan’s, Gerry’s Mini Market in Tipperary town, Nearby in Oola and Bookworm in Thurles.
