Roscrea Residents Concerned Over Government Plan To Provide Community Hotel May Not Materialise

Members of the local community in Roscrea are expressing concern that a Government  plan to provide a Community hotel in the town may not materialise.

The Government made the commitment to Roscrea earlier this year when the Rackett Hall hotel was contracted by the Government to become an Accommodation Centre for International Protection Applicants leaving the town with no functioning hotel.

The former Hotel building in Roscrea town centre known as Grants, the Damer Court and the Pathe hotel has been closed since 2013 and state funding of €150,000 has been allocated for a feasibility study to use the building on a community basis to provide accommodation and services for visitors and town residents.

No details have been agreed as to an operator or financing for the proposed “community Hotel”.

The property has now been advertised for sale. Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill says the project to provide a Community Hotel in Roscrea is still a viable option.

Local Councillor Michael Smith is also optimistic that the state can acquire the property and deliver the community hotel which will also help to tackle vacancy in the town centre.
