Schools across Tipperary saved almost 79,000 used batteries from entering landfill during the last school year as 24 schools in Tipperary participated in WEEE Ireland’s Schools Battery Recycling Competition.

Nationally, the equivalent of 1.5 million used AA batteries were collected and recycled by primary and secondary students during the last school year.

Schools in Tipperary are now being encouraged to take part in the competition which is open to all primary and secondary schools that collect at least 10 full 5kg battery boxes.

The Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice will also benefit from the recycling competition which runs from October to March and has donated  a total of  almost €591,000 to date to the charity.

Valuable materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper are recovered and reused, rather than lost to landfill.
