A doctor originally from Cashel believes there’s a number of factors why dementia is on the increase in Ireland.
Dr James Maxwell says these factors include a growing older population, an increase in high blood pressure, diabetes and depression levels and we have become better at diagnosing it.
Dr Maxwell is also urging people to make a living will which is a written legal document that outlines a person’s wishes when it comes to medical or surgical treatment.
The local doctor says this type of document isn’t spoke about often but if a person loses capacity or is unable to make decisions on their health, a living will can be a guide for their family on their wishes.
World Alzheimer’s Day takes place tomorrow with the Alzheimer’s Society holding Memory Walks this Sunday nationwide – locally a 5km walk will take place at Fethard Town Park at 11am.
The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland estimated that 141,000 people will be living with dementia in 2050.
