Clonoulty Vintage Rally To Celebrate First Arrival Of Volkswagen In Ireland

The 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first Volkswagen Golf in Ireland is to be celebrated at the Clonoulty Vintage Rally on Sunday September 1st.

The group ran a hugely successful Land Rover themed event last year and this year the focus will be on the range of Volkswagen vehicles in operation in Ireland ranging from the much beloved Beetle to the stylish camper vans.

The organisers are expecting a huge turnout of Volkswagen enthusiasts from across the country and is offering a number of prizes including an award for the Best Original vehicle, the Best Modified, the oldest vehicle and the vehicle that travels the farthest distance to take part in the weekend festivities.

A special Volkswagen run is to held on Saturday (departing Clonoulty village at 2pm) and the organisers have arranged a special quiz en route with clues in various locations and have a special plaque for the winner – the plaques were supplied by craftsman Richie Quinn.

All proceeds from the weekend’s event will be presented to the south Tipperary Hospice movement.

The field day on Sunday will also include an arrangement of VW vehicle to form the word “Volkswagen”.

Many of the participants on Saturday are expected to camp in Clonoulty on Saturday night in advance of Sundays Field Day.

A huge range of traders and exhibitors and children’s activities are planned for Sunday with Pierse Motors from Tipperary town to display some of their contemporary Volkswagen vehicles including electric models.

The gates open at 11am on Sunday with music provided by The Killinan Tin Whistle Group and Country Star Aishling Rafferty.

The National Sheaf Tossing competition in memory of memory of Rory O’Dwyer from Borrisoleigh. will also be held on Sunday afternoon.

A motor bike run will depart from Clonoulty village on Sunday at 1.30pm with all proceeds also going to the South Tipperary Hospice.
