South East Mountain Rescue Association Remind Walkers Of The Dangers Of Hiking The Galtees

The South East Mountain Rescue Association is reminding those going up on the Galtees that weather conditions can vary considerably as people move to higher altitudes and that conditions can also change quickly.

The volunteers dealt with two call outs yesterday.  Shortly before 2pm a mountain biker became unwell on the Ballyhouras. As team members were responding to this call another came in at approximately 2.15pm  for a lower leg injury on the Galtees. Team members responding to the Ballyhouras met the casualty making their way down off the trail, they stayed with the casualty, monitored vital signs and guided the National Ambulance Service  paramedics to the casualty location. After assessment by the paramedics the casualty was able to return home in the care of a friend.

SEMRA members used the Black Road and their land rover vehicle to reach the second incident where a walker had fallen and suffered an ankle injury. The injury was assessed by the team doctor and a vacuum splint was used to stabilise the ankle. The casualty was loaded into the Land Rover and driven down off the mountain to a waiting ambulance. All members of SEMRA were safely off the mountain by 5.30pm.
