Hospitals in the Mid West managed by the University of Limerick Hospital Group have canceled a significant number of elective and day surgery appointments due to overcrowding at UHL. Elective and day surgery and outpatient appointments, with some exceptions, are deferred until further notice at UHL, Ennis, Nenagh, St John’s and Croom hospitals.
All affected patients are being contacted directly by hospital staff and these appointments will be rescheduled as soon as possible. Hospital management says the cancellations are in effect across UL Hospitals Group until further notice until the situation in UHL is under control.
This has resulted in the deferral of elective inpatient and day surgery, endoscopy and outpatient appointments. Services at University Maternity Hospital Limerick continue as normal and patients there are advised to attend for their appointments. The Emergency Department at UHL remains open 24-7 for emergency cases and emergency and trauma surgery is continuing. Injury Units and medical assessment units at Ennis, Nenagh, and St John’s hospitals are all operating as normal.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation reported 127 patients on trolleys at UHL yesterday.
