Man Charged In Connection With Fatal Assault In Dundrum

A 65-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal assault in Dundrum in county Tipperary last month.

The man appeared in Newcastle West Court yesterday and has been remanded in custody to appear before Nenagh Court on March 6th.

It is understood that the man is in custody in Limerick Prison.

The attack happened Sunday February 25th but the victim did not attend hospital until Thursday and died on Sunday March 3rd.

A post mortem was carried out yesterday by the State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster.

Ivan Volkov, a Ukrainian national with an address at Holm Oak Cottages, Dundrum was charged with assault causing harm to 69-year-old Shamil Nabiev, an Azerbaijani national, and a second charge of affray, at Dundrum House Hotel on 25 February last.

Mr Volkov, is understood to have claimed he acted in self-defence.

Solicitor Philip English asked that the judge direct that Mr Volkov, who was on crutches, receive all necessary medical attention in prison.

Judge Coolican granted an application for free legal aid.

It is understood that both men were residents in Dundrum under the Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection Directive.
