Deputy Browne Urges People To Become Sepsis Aware

482

Tipperary TD Martin Browne has urged people to become more sepsis aware. The appeal comes following a presentation made to the Oireachtas Petitions Committee by the parents of a fifteen-year-old boy who died due to sepsis in 2018.

Joe Hughes and his partner Karen Phoenix submitted a petition to the Oireachtas Petitions committee in which they called for an increased public awareness campaign relating to sepsis, which took the life of their 15 year-old son and up-and-coming musician Seán.

The family did not know about the nature of sepsis and have now started an awareness campaign called Lil Red’s Sepsis Awareness Campaign (named in honour of young Seán’s stage name).

Sepsis arises when the body’s response to an infection can act abnormally and injure its own tissues and organs. It may lead to shock, multi-organ failure, and death – especially if not recognized early and treated promptly.

Information about sepsis can be found on the website www.sepsisfoundation.ie or on the HSE website.
