Tipperary Councillors are to be informally consulted about new social housing projects in the county in the short term.

The Government has implemented a change to planning law that means such developments are now exempt from the usual Part 8 Planning process until December 2024 in a bid to speed up delivery.

Under the new process the planning application for the housing will be filed but no public submissions will be accepted – projects will have to meet certain criteria to be accepted under the new process.

These criteria include that the development must be on “behalf, jointly or in partnership with a housing association or organisation” – private developers are not included.

The development must also comply with the Local Area Plan and be on land owned by the Council.

The work must commence by December 31st 2024.

County Tipperary currently has over 3000 people on the social housing waiting list.
