Council Blames ESB Staff For Street Lights Outage In Tipp Town

Tipperary County Council is blaming ESB staff for an outage of street lighting in Tipperary town on Thursday last.

The council says the power was switched off to enable works in the John Street area, but not restored at the end of the day leaving St Michael’s Street and Blind Street in darkness on Thursday.

Lights out of action in Market Yard in Tipperary Town are being damaged by vandalism leading the council to install a larger unit with 2000 watts of capacity that is vandal proof. However, this fixture has also been malfunctioning and the council now says that a tender will be sought to replace the smaller lights in the area with a fixture that is vandal proof.

The outage on Thursday March 30th has also raised the issue of the slow pace of repairs to public lighting across the county by the contractor. The contract to repair street lighting on behalf of Tipperary County council is the responsibility of Enerveo Ireland – formerly known as SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions. Members of the public, Councillors and some TDs are highlighting the long lead time for repairs to be completed and have asked Tipperary Council to raise the matter with Enerveo.

Each street light pole has a number attached and faults can be reported online by visiting the website  here  or by calling  0818 372 772 – Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm.
