Councillors at Thurles MD raised the ongoing project at Bowe’s Corner, Thurles at their January meeting yesterday.

The work involves tightening all the junctions and the installation of a raised table and two new pedestrian crossings.  The raised table, road markings and signage have yet to be installed and council Engineer Thomas Duffy asked that councillors wait until the works are completed before passing judgement.  Some vehicles have had difficulty using the junction especially if turning left onto Abbey Road from Butler Avenue – Cllr Micheal Lowry says vehicles of all sizes cannot make the turn without going onto the footpath. The meeting heard that there has been multiple occasion when buses and lorries have had to reverse into traffic. Cllr Lowry says the public perception is that the project is an unmitigated disaster – and that the council will get the blame but it did not design the solution being implemented. The council may have to now look at the movements of all vehicles through the town to ensure congestion is not increased because of the project at Bowe’s corner according to Cllr Lowry.
