Works on the Cashel Road in Tipperary town are expected to start later this year – possibly by mid-Summer.

Plans for the enhancement measures are expected to go to tender next month.

The proposed development extends a distance of approximately 1250m from N24 Bansha Road Roundabout along Fr Matthew Street.

The scheme includes: upgrades to the road layout with reduced carriageway width, widening of footways with new paving, new road pavement, upgrades to the public lighting, drainage upgrades including flood alleviation works at Pike Cross and enhanced soft and hard landscaping including the installation of upgraded street furniture.  There may also include alterations to water/telecom services impacted by the works. There will be some changes to parking spaces but it is intended that an upgrade of the laneway at the back of Sean Allen terrace and also an upgrade of the carpark at St Michael’s Cemetery included in the scheme will compensate for changes to  on-street deficits.  Once these additional areas are included in the scheme there are no parking deficits over the entire N74 scheme based on the Council’s surveys of current parking demand.

The work is expected to take 15-18 months to complete once it commences. The road project was approved in Spring 2021 by local councillors in a decision that saw works on the Main St. portion  deferred.  Opposition to the Main St works was due to the impact of the disruption on local businesses following the COVID lockdowns, the impact of the proposed design on the takeaway trade especially at night and the desire to ensure a town By Pass is delivered as soon as possible.
