Thurles Municipal District Council Seeking Funds For The Cleaning Of Two National Monuments In Liberty Square

302

Thurles Municipal District council are seeking funds to cover the cost of cleaning two national monuments in Liberty Square. An application to the Heritage Council under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme in 2022 was partially successful when funding was approved for works on the Fountain in Roscrea but not for the 1798 Monument in Thurles. The council intends to seek funds for the 1798 Monument and in the future for cleaning and maintenance of the Dr Croke Memorial situated in the western end of Liberty Square. The area around the Dr Croke Memorial is to be significantly upgraded and the monument will not be cleaned before that work is completed. Lighting on both monuments was installed as part of the first phase of the Liberty Square enhancement project – however it is several years since either monument was cleaned.

The Built Heritage Investment Scheme offers a maximum grant of €15,000.  The council does not have a professional quotation for the works at this time. The closing date for applications for the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and the Historic Structures fund is January 23rd. All applications must be submitted by the Planning section of Tipperary County Council and those interested in suggesting a project should consult the scheme details available on the council website.
