St. Joseph’s Primary School Tipperary Town Announced Winner Of Best Primary School Choir By RTE Lyric FM

1014

St. Joseph’s Primary School Tipperary Town is the Winner of Best Primary School Choir in the RTE Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas Competition 2022

Evelyn Grant announced the Choirs for Christmas Winners during her Lyric FM show. This is the fourth time that St. Joseph’s Primary School, Tipperary Town won this most prestigious award.

The Choir Director is Ms. Helen Colbert (Ms Colbert won the Conductor Award in 2018) and school Principal Ms Louise Tobin believes the songs selected by Ms Colbert play a huge part in the Choir’s success.

The songs are typically upbeat, happy songs that the girls just love to learn and perform with such enthusiasm at Christmas time.

St. Joseph’s School Choir was first formed in 1998. This year’s winning choir was made up of 41 students from 5th and 6th classes. The Choir rehearses every Tuesday from 1.30 p.m. – 2.30p.m.  Classes 3rd and 4th also take part in the school Choir on occasion.

St. Joseph’s School Choir performs for the school community regularly and at many local events to include the turning on of the Christmas Lights in Tipperary Town, Carol Singing downtown and by invitation to other local events.

The School Choirs at St. Josephs have made many CDs over recent years to include 2 Christmas CDs and 2 Springtime CDs and indeed were featured on the Lyric FM Christmas CD in 2012 with the RTE Concert Orchestra.

This is the Choir’s 9th time entering the ‘Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas Competition’ and what success they have experienced to be runners up in Dec. 2011, winners in 2014, 2017, 2018 and now again in 2022 – a wonderful achievement.

In 2017 & 2018 St. Joseph’s Choir were invited to sing at the Launch of the St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal in Dublin in the company of Ryan Tubridy. The pupils had a fantastic time on this occasion.  St. Josephs were thrilled to see the return of Choirs for Christmas Competition since COVID and to partake in the competition once again along with over 90 choirs from all around the  country.

The winning song for this year; was called “Christmastime, That Special Time of Year” and you can hear it on St. Joseph’s school Blog Soundcloud link  here

Composer: Lynn Shaw Bailey & Becki Slagle Mayo, lyrics by Lynn Shaw Bailey and the accompaniment is provided by Ms Helen Colbert.
