Over 400,000 people can now start applying for a new €500 rental tax credit announced in September 2022 as part of the Budget cost of living support package. Two tax credits, worth €500 each, are to be given to eligible renters for both 2022 and 2023.

Your tenancy must be registered with the Residential Tenancy Board, unless it is a type of tenancy where this is not required, called a licence arrangement. This includes a rent-a-room or digs arrangement. If you are related to your landlord, the tenancy must be registered with the Residential Tenancy Board. The credit is set against tax so to get the full amount, a person would have to have earned at least €19,500 in 2022.

For PAYE earners, applications can be made  from January 1, while self-employed persons will be able to claim from 24 January.

Details of how to apply for the rent tax credit are available on the Revenue website.
