Thurles MD Councillors were updated on the current housing situation in the District at the November meeting. At present there are 147 homes at various stages of planning or actual construction in the District. In addition, there are another 58 units being developed by Approved Housing Bodies(AHB) such as Thurles Lions Housing Trust, Templemore Voluntary Housing Association, Cena – Culturally Appropriate Homes CLG and Novas Arlington for the District.
However, despite the pipeline of 205 units the demand far outweighs supply. There are 845 approved housing applicants in the District and at present the council has 33 vacant houses. Only 9 of the vacant houses are available for allocation, 18 are deemed to need minor repairs and the final six are considered to need major repairs before being allocated.
From January 1st the number of people eligible for social housing is set to increase as the income threshold limit will be increased to €30,000.
The Council will seek to develop housing in areas of high demand – the 845 approved applicants are located as follows:
