Housing Crisis In Tipperary Needs To Be Awknowledged

The housing crisis in Tipperary needs to be acknowledged according to Sinn Fein TD Martin Browne – the party had sought the declaration of a housing emergency by the Dáil.

Rent costs in Co Tipperary increased by 12.8% in the last 12 months to an average monthly rent of €1,133 with very few properties available to rent on the letting website daft.ie. Twenty properties in the entire county are available for rent in Tipperary today.

The Cashel based TD says that given the increased cost of living people are facing extreme challenges to secure housing. The TD cited cases of teachers sleeping in cars, people living in sheds and tents and notes that many of these people are not included in the homeless statistics as they aren’t in emergency accommodation.

The TD says whole generations are increasingly becoming locked out from home ownership while the shortage is also causing many people to put up with substandard housing. Deputy Browne says the Government must accept that the situation needs an emergency level response.
