A new school building in Thurles may be co-located on the Campus of Mary Immaculate College. Coláiste Mhuire in Thurles, a co-educational and multi-denominational school is seeking to expand and following discussions with local stakeholders the project may involve a new school being built adjacent to MIC St Patricks Campus.

The school has DEIS status and is the only provider of ASD classes for boys in Post Primary Education – it projects future enrolment of 750 students for second level programmes.

The school also provides Post Leaving Certificate courses. MIC officials are supportive of providing a site for a new school building on their campus.

Feasibility reports from Tipperary ETB are now with the Department of Education and a decision may be made next month.

The Department has provided funding for repairs to the present building constructed in 1981 and for additional pre fab units to be added to the Castlemeadows location.

The preference of Tipperary County Council planning officials is to avoid further prefab units on site. Deputy Michael Lowry and Jackie Cahill raised the project with the Taoiseach during his recent visit to Thurles.
