11,600 Street Lights To Be Upgraded To LED In Tipp

497

Tipperary County Council is collaborating in a National Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project, which will see 11,600 lights upgraded to LED across Tipperary.

The national project is being rolled out on a regional basis with Tipperary County Council included in the Eastern region.

Kilkenny County Council is leading the project in the region.

Under this contract, 83,000 lights will be upgraded across 9 counties including Tipperary.

Public lights consume half of all the energy used by Tipperary County Council. Upgrading to LED lights will help the council to meet energy efficient targets while reducing energy and maintenance costs.

LED stands for “light-emitting diode”. They feature a semiconductor compound, which converts electrical energy into light.

Modern LEDs offer energy-efficiency and a long service life.

Nationally, there are 21 local authorities involved in the project which will upgrade approximately 205,000 public lights, under a total investment of €150 million.

Once complete, the project will reduce CO2 emissions by 205,000 tonnes each year, while saving the local authorities €12m in energy and maintenance costs annually.
