Tipp TD Contacts Housing Minister On Enforcing Tenant Rights

Tipperary TD Martin Browne has contacted the Housing Minister over reports of tenants in rental accommodation accepting poor conditions, abuse and breach of rights because they are afraid to speak out due to lack of alternative housing.

The Cashel based TD says instances of tenants being physically threatened have come to the fore in recent days in addition to  cases  where entitlements such as the electricity grant are not being passed on to them.

Deputy Browne urges any tenants with difficulties to contact the  Residential Tenancies Board or to the local authority.

He acknowledged that some are afraid to do this as they fear eviction and becoming homeless.

The matter has now been communicated to the Minister for Housing and a request has been made for oversight agencies to be proactive in enforcing tenants’ rights.
