Food security for the people of Europe must remain high on the agenda for all legislators across all EU Member States according to Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill.

Deputy Cahill, the current chair of the Oireachtas Agriculture, Food and Marine Committee, made the comment when addressing the Conference of Committee Chairs of the Parliaments of the 27 EU Member States in France earlier today.

The Thurles based TD and farmer says the Common Agriculture Policy is moving away from a production based policy to an environmental based policy to address the issue of climate change.

Deputy Cahill says that the EU cannot afford to reduce production as such a measure will only lead to higher prices for consumers and is now seeking a redraft of the CAP due to come into operation in January 2023.
