Greater flexibility must be afforded to national governments to reduce VAT rates on home heating oil by the European Union, according to Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher.

The matter was raised today (Thursday) in the European Parliament during a debate on fair taxation.

Under existing EU Rules, nastions have control over general taxation policy but the issue of VAT is managed uniformly across the EU by Brussels.

The Irish government has amended excise rates on fuel but is restricted by the EU’s Energy Directive as regards reducing the cost of home heating oil.

MEP Kelleher has asked the Commission to review the situation saying households need more support to hear their homes and are facing a doubling in price.

‘ISsue of price increases at the petrol pumps is a concern’

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Minister for Consumer Protection, Robert Troy says the issue of price increases at the petrol pumps is a concern for consumers and businesses requiring transport alike.

Mr Troy says his staff are working to ensure consumers are aware of their rights and businesses are aware of their obligations in this regard.

He encouraged any consumer with evidence of cartel behaviour or abuse of dominance with regards to high fuel prices to to contact the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission investigate the matter.
