The Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue is to bring a special proposal for pig farmers to today’s cabinet meeting.

300 pig farmers who are members of the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Scheme are to get an emergency payment worth €20,000 each to help with the rising input costs.

The package will cost an estimated €7 million for a sector that produces pork products worth an estimated €1 billion annually.

The news has been welcomed by IFA president Tim Cullinan.
