Plans for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Tipperary town took a significant step forward last night.

A public meeting was held in the Porter House Pub last night (Thursday) organised by Tipperary Town Chamber.

A call for participants and ideas had been issued in the days leading up to the meeting.

The Chamber will secure insurance for an event in the Market Yard area and the focus will be on a family friendly event, with a tentative time of 1pm to 3pm put forward.

Approximately 30 people attended the event including Councillors Mary Hanna Hourigan, Anne Marie Ryan and John Crosse.

The meeting heard that local groups and clubs would be interested in holding events on the day, such as Tipperary Town Library, Tipperary Excel and Tipperary Musical Society.

The Excel has been approached about running three Irish themed movies throughout the day with the Musical Society possibly giving a brief performance.

Comhaltas and other musical groups may also give a performance on the day.

A special children’s mini parade, a best hat competition and a sensory area may also feature.

Seating, food and other children’s activities were also discussed in addition to having St. Patrick other loved children’s characters present on the day.

Options for a stage and PA system were also considered for ceili or line dancing.

Youth Work Ireland Tipperary offered to do face painting on the day and local businesses have been encouraged to incorporate St. Patrick’s Day into their window displays.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 16th February at 7pm and all are welcome.

Any further suggestions or offers of help can be made to the Chamber Office on James street or by email to [email protected].
