Banking staff are being trained by Woman’s Aid to recognise the signs of financial abuse.

Recent research found that over 20% of women aged 18-34 don’t have control of their finances.

Amárach, who carried out the survey on behalf of the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) showed almost one third of younger women had relied on help from others and almost half of those were being helped at the time of the survey.

BPFI’s Head of Sustainable Banking Louise O’Mahony says that this type of abuse occurs in close relationships and can happen at any age, regardless of wealth or status.
