The National Immunisation Advisory Committee is recommending that over 18’s will be able to receive the Novavax’s COVID vaccine.

This follows the granting of conditional marketing authorisation for the vaccine by the European Medicines Agency.

The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly  welcomes and accept the new recommendations as part of Ireland’s vaccination programme.

Minister Donnelly says This fifth vaccine will provide another option for adults who remain unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

This particular vaccine, Nuvaxovid, is a spike protein-based vaccine, and is the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved that is based on that used in existing vaccines including the Hepatitis B and whooping cough vaccines.

“The vaccine has been shown to be highly effective in preventing symptomatic, moderate and severe disease.

The vaccine is expected to be available next month and the minister again urged those who have not yet been vaccinated to come forward.

This vaccine will also be suitable for those individuals who could not avail of another COVID-19 vaccine because of a medical contra-indication e.g. allergic reaction. The vaccine is given in two doses with an interval of three weeks between doses.
