Majority of Students Favour Leaving Cert Hybrid Model

A majority of Leaving Certificate students favour hybrid State exam system this year.

An online survey by The Second Level students Union reports 68% of respondents are in favour of a choice of format for 2022.

Over 40,900 responses were gathered from students across the country, with one in three senior cycle students in Ireland responding.

The Department of Education says it’s intention is to proceed with the traditional exam format which will be modified to make allowance to disruption in student learning during the pandemic.

Taoiseach Mícheál Martin says the option of offering a hybrid Leaving cert was not ruled out and a decision will be made by the Government in the next few weeks.

The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals believes that a hybrid leaving certificate should be offered, while both second level teaching unions, the TUI and the ASTI, want the exams to go ahead as planned, saying there is no justification for the hybrid model.

In the survey, students also voiced their concerns about missing classes, absenteeism of both students and teachers in the classroom and the pressure the current situation is putting on their mental health.
