Thousands of people, including tourists in campsites, have been evacuated as a wildfire raged near the resort of Saint-Tropez in southern France.

Around 750 firefighters and water-dropping aircraft were battling the blaze in difficult conditions, with high temperatures and strong winds.

Wildfires have already flared this summer around the Mediterranean basin, including in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Algeria and Morocco. The fires have caused huge destruction and disruption to economic activity in these countries.

Combined with some weather incidents involving periods of intense rainfall causing flooding in Germany and Italy these events are linked to the impacts of climate change and rising global temperatures.
