Appointment Of New Shannon Airport Chairperson Reversed Due To “Insensitive” Tweets

Mr. Eamon Ryan, T.D., Minister for Transport, has reversed an announced made yesterday in respect of the appointment of a new Chairperson for the Shannon Group.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr Ryan announced the appointment of Mr. Aaron Forde – however it later emerged that Mr Forde had a social media legacy that fell below acceptable standards. Mr Forde has since deleted all of his social media accounts.

In a letter to Minister Ryan, Aaron Forde said he had reflected on his position and decided to withdraw his appointment as chairperson of Shannon Group Plc. He wrote that he wished to apologise unreservedly for remarks he made on Twitter which have become the subject of focu: “The language used in a particular Tweet was wrong, insensitive and needless. I am truly sorry.”He added that he wished to apologise in particular to people from the Traveller community”.

The Department of Transport reports that it will work to appoint a new chairperson as quickly as possible.
