Boost for Tipp town primary schools with additional teaching post

There was good news for Tipperary Town today upon the news that an additional teaching post has been allocated to support non-Irish national primary school pupils.

Last Summer the Minister for Education Joe Mc Hugh agreed a package of supports for the primary schools in Tipp Town as an interim measure ahead of their future inclusion in the Deis programme for schools in areas deemed to be disadvantaged.

The Department of Education has confirmed to Deputy Michael Lowry that the allocation of supports for non-Irish National pupils has been increased.

In all, St. Joseph’s Primary has been granted one full-time post and St. Michael’s Junior Boys, St. Michael’s Girls and The Monastery C.B.S. will share 2 full-time posts.

This is an increase since last October of one teaching post to support non-Irish nationals, and an increase of three posts since this time last year when none of the schools had any of these provisions.

According to Deputy Lowry, the latest appointment completes the delivery of the interim package of supports agreed in 2019.

It is hoped that full Deis status will be granted to the town’s primary schools later this year.

Inclusion in that programme would give the schools access to additional resources and supports.
