Assurance given by Tipp Co-op on odour issue

It is hoped that any odours being emitted from Tipperary Co-op affecting parts of Tipperary town will be eliminated in the very near future.

Last week, March4Tipp met with senior management of Tipperary Co-op to discuss the source of the problem.

While being given a tour of the new multi-million euro treatment plant that has been under construction, the group noticed a particular odour being emitted while a truck was collecting sludge for disposal.

The group was told that these collections will be phased out once the Co-op’s new wastewater treatment plant is fully operational.

Tipp Mid West was also given a tour of the facility this week, including the new wastewater treatment plant alongside upgraded drier and evaporator technology.

In total, around €30 million is being invested in upgrading the facility.

One specific measure is the replacement of the old biotower, which dates back decades.

It is hoped that once all works are completed at Tipperary Co-op’s premises, production will increase and more jobs will be created.

Tipp Mid West was also told that issues can arise occasionally when the transition from an old system to a new system is being made and this is a reason for a particular odour being emitted from time to time.

Tipp Mid West was given an assurance similar to that given to March4Tipp, that while the work at the premises is set to continue, management expects that the cause of any odour being emitted from the plant will be addressed over the coming days (this weekend), and the problem will cease.

Meanwhile, March4Tipp representatives say they were told that they would be informed of any issues that cause this timeline to change.
