The founder of Chernobyl Children International has told Tipp Mid West of her extreme concern at the outbreak of Covid-19 infections at the charity’s orphanage in Belarus.

Ms Roche said that a number of children and staff have contracted the virus at the Vesnova Orphanage and outlined how, due to genetic disorders and low immune systems, the situation is critical for the children at the centre.

The Tipperary humanitarian also pointed out how the government of Belarus is out of step with other countries when it comes to implementing preventative measures such as social distancing.

The centre’s supply of painkillers and cough bottles has also run out.

She says the centre is doing all it can to manage the situation and that the charity is also working with other groups and organisations to obtain vital supplies and protective equipment, while also looking for ways to find more suitable accommodation in which the children can be cared for and treated an a way that is effective against the virus.

However she remains extremely worried at the situation.
