Non-payment of student nurses ‘unacceptable’ to any ‘fair-minded person’ – Kelly

Tipperary TD and Labour’s health spokesperson Alan Kelly has said that student nurses who are working in the health system at the moment should be paid for the work they do.

His call follows a similar demand by the INMO who called for student nurses and midwives on unpaid placements during the Covid-19 outbreak to be remunerated as paid employees.

‘putting themselves out on the frontline to protect the public from the spread of Covid-19’

Mr Kelly pointed out that student nurses are ‘putting themselves out on the frontline to protect the public from the spread of Covid-19’.

He went on to say that unlike many of their colleagues in the country’s hospitals, they are not being paid.

He added that ‘any fair-minded person would say that this is completely unacceptable for the times we are in’.
