A former Tipperary Labour senator has told Tipp Mid West that he believes Alan Kelly is the right person to take over as Labour Party leader.

The current leader Brendan Howlin yesterday confirmed that he intends to step down from the position over the coming weeks, following a disappointing general election result for the party.

Denis Landy, from Carrick-on-Suir this morning paid tribute to Mr Howlin, and said that he will be backing Alan Kelly, should he put his name forward for the leadership contest which is yet to open.

He also believes that Deputy Kelly would win the contest.
