2019 was a worse year on Irish roads than 2018, figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has revealed.

148 people lost their lives on Irish roads in 2019 – the figure was 142 in 2018 which indicates a 4% increase in road deaths last year.

Co Tipperary had one of the highest number of road deaths for any one county in the country, at 13 – exceeded only by Cork with 16 and Dublin with 19.

The numbers of pedestrian and passenger deaths have both declined in 2019, but the figures indicate that 25 more drivers lost their lives in the past year than in 2018 – something the RSA has described as a worrying statistic.
