New MRI scanner at UHL – ‘one small step’ towards tackling overcrowding

Labour TD Alan Kelly has said that he hopes a decision by the HSE to commission a second MRI scanner for University Hospital Limerick may help to discharge patients in a more timely manner.

The Labour Party spokesperson on health has been told that the scanner will be in place by mid-December.

At present, unlike other hospitals of its size UHL only has one MRI scanner. That scanner is 14 years old and, according to the Tipperary TD, it keeps breaking down, resulting in many patients not being discharged or transferred on time.

He has described the news as ‘one small step’ in dealing with the ongoing overcrowding crisis that is obvious at the hospital on a near-daily basis.
