End of road chaos in sight, but no rate cuts for traders

Traders affected by the ongoing road works on the N24 through Tipperary town will not be getting any rates concessions.

At a meeting on the matter yesterday, Tipperary County Council officials said that there is no provision in the rules governing commercial rates that would allow the council to compensate traders for the inconvenience experienced, through a reduction in their rates.

Over much of the year, since works got underway, traders in the areas affected have reported a drop in footfall, with a number having to reduce employees’ working hours.

Cllr Annemarie Ryan, who sought the rates rebate, said the news is disappointing, but added that council engineers have confirmed that all going well, the roads network in the area should be back to normal by the end of the month.
